چکیده

" Assessments of change, dynamics, and cause and effect are at the heart of thinking and explanation. To understand is to know what cause provokes what effect, by what means, at what rate. How then is such knowledge to be represented? " (Tufte, 1997: 10) The aim of this paper is to explore possible directions for advancing multimodal analysis through the use of digital technology. Historically, the impact of technology on knowledge is evident from the introduction of the printing press in the late fifteenth century, which led to the close study and subsequent development of mathematics and science (Eisenstein, 1979). Today, " computerization turns media into computer data " (Manovich, 2001: 45). The recursive nature of the computerisation process, where " images scatter into data, data gathers into images " , (Galison, 2002: 322) permits the visual display of data flow which is experienced over time, " be it in science, statistics, architecture, design, digital art, or any combination of these " (Paul, 2003: 175). There are few constants in the digital environment where everything is variable and open to manipulation and recontextualisation. However,

Multiparty multimodal interaction: a preliminary analysis

When people work together, they often talk about the objects in their environment. Not surprisingly, their dialogues are multimodal, incorporating speech, gesture, gaze, haptics, and perhaps other modalities. However, proponents of technology may be troubled to learn that despite the current state and future promise of spoken and multimodal research, many of these workers do not particularly wa...

SOLVING BEST PATH PROBLEM ON MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS WITH FUZZY COSTS

Numerous algorithms have been proposed to solve the shortest-pathproblem; many of them consider a single-mode network and crispcosts. Other attempts have addressed the problem of fuzzy costs ina single-mode network, the so-called fuzzy shortest-path problem(FSPP). The main contribution of the present work is to solve theoptimum path problem in a multimodal transportation network, inwhich the co...

Language technology tools and resources for the analysis of multimodal communication

In this paper we describe how the complexity of human communication can be analysed with the help of language technology. We present the HuComTech corpus, a multimodal corpus containing 50 hours of videotaped interviews containing a rich annotation of about 2 million items annotated on 33 levels. The corpus serves as a general resource for a wide range of research addressing natural conversatio...

Nonlinear energy harvesting through a multimodal electro-mechanical system

A semi-analytical method is used to illustrate the behavior of a multimodal nonlinear electromechanical system which is under base-excitation. System is considered as piezo-ceramic patches attached to a cantilever beam coupled to a resistive load. The cantilever beam is modeled as a nonlinear Timoshenko beam using Assumed Mode method and equations of motion are derived through Lagrange's equati...
